Who we are
Cam Brewer
Cam is a lawyer, professor, entrepreneur, writer, and activist. He practiced international arbitration in New York, aboriginal and environmental law in Vancouver, and clerked for the Chief Justice of British Columbia and at the Supreme Court of Canada. He was Executive Director of Smart Growth BC, ran eco-certification programs at the Canada Green Building Council and the Silva Forest Foundation, and founded a co-op that manufactured and distributed sustainable wood products. Cam served as Controller for Greenpeace Canada, Co-Chair of the VanCity Community Foundation, and principal of an urban sustainability consulting firm.
Herb Hammond
Herb is a forest ecologist and Nature-directed stewardship planner with 30 years of experience in research, industry, teaching and consulting. For 40 years he maintained the designation of Registered Professional Forester in BC. Together with his wife Susan, he founded the Silva Forest Foundation, a charitable society dedicated to research and education in ecosystem-based conservation planning. Herb has worked cooperatively with Indigenous Nations and rural communities to develop more than 25 ecosystem-based plans across Canada, and in Russia, the United States, and Indonesia. In 2003, Herb received the Gold Award for Sustainable Living at the Canadian Environmental Awards. Herb likes to remind us that the forest sustains us; we do not sustain the forest. He has a B.S. in Forest Science/ Management from Oregon State University and a Masters of Forestry from the University of Washington.
Sean Markey
Sean, PhD MCIP RPP, is a professor and certified planner with the School of Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University. Sean's research concerns issues of local and regional economic development, rural and small-town development, and sustainable planning and infrastructure. He has published widely in academic journals and has co-authored/edited numerous books. Sean continues to work with municipalities, non-profit organizations, Indigenous communities, and the business community to promote and develop sustainable forms of community and regional development.
